Mukazi
About the project
As part of our mission to tell socially impactful stories, we embarked on our first in-house project: the Mukazi Series. It is a pioneer documentary series about inspiring Ugandan women (Luganda: woman - mukazi) who are striving to change the stereotype around the traditional role of women in Uganda and to inspire young girls and women to not give up on their dreams. Due to the feminist movement and political activism, many women have challenged the stereotypes and have broken those barriers and thrived for their rights.
In the month of February 2019, we filmed and edited the first Mukazi episode. The first episode features Faith Aweko, a social entrepreneur and founder of Reform Africa, who battles family conflicts, education expectations to forge her career as a pioneer in tackling Uganda's plastic waste problem, and pollution.
Mukazi premiere
In celebration of Women's Day in March 2021 , we organized the Mukazi premiere which attracted over 60 people. The documentary featured Faith Aweko, a social entrepreneur who transforms plastic waste into sustainable products. We further organized a panel discussion, invited female vendors like Ooosha Soaps, Kentaro Organics, Reform Africa, and Aesthetics Things and created an environment that encouraged networking among the invitees.
The panel discussion 'Navigating Entrepreneurship as a Woman in Uganda' had panellists Faith Aweko, Vanessa Atim, Rebecca Nanjego and Siima Sabiti who shared their experiences on imposter syndrome, failure, growth, and balancing entrepreneurship with society's expectations.
The Mukazi Series premiere screening was a success and we are looking forward to another one this year.
Mukazi Spotlight
To keep the conversation going regarding women empowerment, we introduced Mukazi Spotlight. Mukazi Spotlight is a campaign that documents women who are thriving in their careers and business. We sit down with women from different walks of life as they share what it means to be a woman, the challenges they face, what inspires them and what they are doing to make a difference. The purpose of these videos is to equip, educate and inspire other women to succeed in all aspects of life.
